New 500Hz Gaming Monitors: Two Arrive, Surprising Prices

The MSI MAG 272QP and Gigabyte Aorus FO27Q5P Monitors Have Arrived

A pair of new OLED gaming monitors with an extremely fast 500Hz refresh rate have been announced by manufacturers. The Gigabyte Aorus FO27Q5P and MSI MAG 272QP QD-OLED X50 monitors, both built around the same Samsung 27-inch QD-OLED panel, are set to hit the market soon.

These monitors boast a 1440p resolution panel with HDR1000 certification, a super-fast 0.03 ms response time, FreeSync Premium Pro support, and G-Sync Compatibility. Additionally, they offer highly accurate colors with 99% DCI-P3 coverage and a refresh rate of 500Hz. The Samsung Gen 3 panel provides improved readability and finer details, along with a peak brightness of 1,000 nits.

Key Differences and Features

While both monitors share similar core specs, there are some differences in terms of connectivity. The Gigabyte Aorus FO27Q5P offers DisplayPort 2.1a UHBR20, while the MSI MAG 272QP features DisplayPort 1.4a. Both models include two HDMI 2.1 ports, but only the Gigabyte monitor has built-in 5W speakers.

Despite the impressive specs, the most important aspect for potential buyers might be the price. Newegg has listed the MSI MAG 272QP at $750, making it more affordable than the existing Samsung Odyssey OLED with the same panel. The official pricing for the Gigabyte Aorus FO27Q5P is yet to be revealed.

Analysis: More Affordable 500Hz OLED Monitors Are Welcome

While there are monitors with faster refresh rates available, the 500Hz OLED panels on these new models are a significant addition to the market. The Samsung Odyssey OLED G60SF, priced at $1,000, already offers similar specs, making the MSI and Gigabyte options potentially more budget-friendly.

These high-refresh-rate monitors are targeted towards competitive gamers and esports enthusiasts who demand top performance. It’s essential to have a powerful PC and graphics card to fully utilize the capabilities of a 500Hz monitor at 1440p resolution.

Concerns about burn-in, a common issue with OLED screens, are addressed by both MSI and Gigabyte through their warranties and proprietary technologies. MSI’s OLED Care 2.0 and Gigabyte’s OLED Care, along with heat dissipation measures, aim to minimize the risk of burn-in.

Ultimately, the arrival of these new monitors is a positive development for gamers seeking high-performance displays. Despite the premium pricing, the features and technology offered by the MSI MAG 272QP and Gigabyte Aorus FO27Q5P make them compelling options in the competitive gaming monitor market.
