Massive Upgrade to Australia’s NBN This Weekend: Don’t Miss Out

It’s been close to a year since NBN Co announced major speed upgrades

It’s been nearly a year since NBN Co revealed plans for significant speed upgrades across its fixed-line network. With just seven days left until the official launch on Sunday, September 14, it’s important to understand what this means for you and how to take full advantage of the new offerings.

What are the upgrades all about?

NBN Co is set to introduce a range of new speed tiers, including a ‘Hyperfast’ 2Gbps option, as well as upgrades to existing NBN 100 and NBN 250 plans. These upgrades will provide users with faster speeds and more choices when selecting their NBN plans, with options ranging from 500Mbps to 2,000Mbps.

Is there a catch?

To access the new speed tiers, you must have a fibre to the premises (FTTP) or hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC) connection. Unfortunately, if you have a fibre to the curb/node (FTTC/N) or fibre to the building (FTTB) connection, you won’t be eligible for the upgrades. However, FTTC/N premises may qualify for NBN Co’s free fibre upgrade program.

Do you have the right connection type?

Having the right connection type is essential, but you also need a router that can support the faster speeds. Look for a router that is compatible with Wi-Fi 6, 6E, or 7 technology to ensure optimal performance.

Can you get an upgraded plan now?

Some ISPs have already launched 500Mbps and 750Mbps plans, with more expected to follow suit after the official launch. Providers like Exetel and Spintel are offering these plans, but it’s worth waiting to see what other options become available in the coming weeks.

If you’re interested in the upgraded speeds but don’t have the necessary equipment, consider holding off for now or signing up with an early provider to secure a technician visit. Cheaper plans may become available as more ISPs roll out their offerings.
