Nice mini PC for a home lab server
Nice little PC!Overall I would recommend this Mini PC for a homelab or very light home use, it’s a no brainer. However, If what you’re looking for is a smooth and reliable home or office Mini PC to run windows, web browsing and office applications, I would recommend you rather look for a mini PC with a more powerful CPU and some extra storage.I chose this Mini PC over Raspberry Pi for a small server in my home lab due to its CPU power, memory capacity and the flexibility it offers when running Linux, thanks to it’s x86 CPU.The N150 CPU performs very well so far, running Ubuntu Server for some streaming, home NAS and other small projects. 16G RAM is enough for my use case and it keeps this little guy running smoothly. It includes Wifi6, which is a plus at this price range, however it only supports 80Mhz wireless channels in 5Ghz, so max WLAN throughput is usually near 600Mbps. Build quality feels solid, the number of ports is good, and it’s very quiet. So far I have not heard it’s internal fan kick in.The Mini PC comes with Windows 11 by default, however I only tested it for a few days before moving to Ubuntu Server 24, as intended. Windows 11 runs ok, however it’s clear the CPU lacks power to keep up if you start running several apps at the same time or need to run some CPU intensive app. On the other hand, no issues running Ubuntu Server so far with a few small projects. I have not faced any compatibility issues with drivers in Linux, which is a relief.Definetly an amazing value for the money if you manage to grab one for less thank $150.Extra note: If you plan to use it for some local streaming using Jellyfin or Plex, the N150 processor supports hardware transcoding which makes it a powerful streaming box.

Great for lightweight server use with POSIX systems
I needed a server to host a secure Time Machine backup share for one MacBook used for business. For the money itâs a great deal with plenty of disk space. It also runs POSIX protocol systems well, and has proven to be a pretty awesome Samba Server!

Excellent miniPC for general purpose computing
I purchased the GMKtec 12GB / 1TB SSD model to have a secondary computer to play with. It comes with Windows 11 Pro and, out of the box, set up was very simple. The unit has a good build quality, (hardened plastic), and includes a black and red top plate for customization, should you want it. Removing this plate gives you access to the miniSSD inside.Performance wise, this is a nice little unit to have around for web surfing, watching YT, handling emails etc. The GMKtec handles these activities with aplomb. I like the LED lighting that lights the unit up. You can change the LED color from within the BIOS.Windows 11 Pro is OK, but the ads and extra telemetry leave me shaking my head. Câmon Microsoft. Nobody likes this.Turning those âfeaturesâ off improved the performance and overall experience of using the GMKtec even more. (Less usage of RAM and swap.)The fan kicks on from time to time, and it is noticeable, but not annoyingly so. At some point, I will get another miniSSD and throw Linux on it. For what itâs worth, this unit works great with Synergy, which lets me share my keyboard and mouse between my two computers.For under $200US, this miniPC is a pretty good deal. (Review written after a monthâs usage.)

It is small with no fan
Beautifully packaged and nicely presented I looked forward to getting this thing up and running. Between the computer and Microsoft it was about the slowest takeoff I have even experienced. It took 3 hours before I could actually do something with it It started off by updating itself and that was process it repeated 3 times.Finally I could do something with it so I tuned into a tv station and found there was no sound. It seems there is no sound signal coming from the 2 HDMI sockets which surprised me. I bought an adapter for the DP 1.4 socket which will transmit the sound. Means=while I set the sound up onto a pair of bluetooth speakers which will at least allow me to use it. The problem with that is having to use the mouse to control the volume.Other than that, I love this tiny thing. It runs cool so it will stay on pemanently. The video is clear, the speed is fast enough for 4 k video and it can be hidden behind the tv, if your mouse is powerful enough to reach from your armchair.

The Intel N97 Mini PC by GMKtek is a powerful little Windows workstation that is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. See photo next to Rubix cube for reference, it’s TINY. I tested it as a Windows workstation first and found it to be highly capable for day-to-day computing – content creation, web browsing, a bit of light gaming. It comes loaded with Windows 11, Microsoft Office, and CoPilot – everything you need to be off to the races. But what really sets it apart to me is the power in small form-factor – this is now my goto Raspberry Pi alternative for home automation and open source projects. Proxmox, Plex, AdGuard Home, Docker, Home Assistant – no sweat! My home Lab has to pass the wife test so no rack servers, noisy fans, or heat. It has to be small and quiet, and the N97 fits the bill.Love:- The power and capabilities for the small size.- Oh did I mention, it’s a great price too!- Plenty of RAM and SSD storage- Dual HDMINot dealbreakers, but room to improve:- No USB C ports for peripherals. The only one is designated for the power supply. Come on fellas give me a USB C on the front and one on the back.- It’s not fanless. The fan is quiet, but when I stress tested it, the fan does become audible. Honestly not an issue if it’s in an enclosure (even a media cabinet), but be aware it has potential to be noticeable in quiet environments.Final verdict – great for day to day, fantastic for home projects.

Iâve been using the GMKtec Mini PC with my wall-mounted TV, and itâs been fantastic. Itâs fast and handles web browsing, streaming, and multitasking effortlessly. A pleasant surprise was that the pre-installed Windows 11 Pro didnât require a Microsoft account during setup, which made getting started incredibly easy.The PC runs quietly, which is great for a living room setup, and its performance has been smooth for everyday tasks and light gaming. While itâs not designed for heavy gaming or video editing, itâs perfect for streaming and general use. Overall, itâs a reliable and efficient mini PC that works wonderfully as a media hub!

I’m using this mini PC to drive a projector in my living room and it’s incredible what it’s capable of; it’s replacing (and far superior to) a 65-watt AMD Kaveri-based APU system that’s pretty old now and really showing its age. I’ve read that in CPU terms the cores in this mini PC are very similar to the E-cores in Intel’s modern high-end CPUs and that matches my experience. Everyday PC tasks are accomplished effortlessly, classic games run perfectly, video playback is flawless, and web browsing is responsive. Not as nice as a high-end PC of course but for the $240 I paid, very good. 12GB of RAM is quite generous for everyday tasks; 16GB is what’s expected for high-end gaming.This uses an N150 instead of a N100 as in older Intel mini PCs. If you’re looking at buying this in early 2025 and intend to use it with Linux, be aware that driver support for this chip is still incomplete and video playback will suffer as a result. This will be fixed in time, but right now it’s not worth the bother. I investigated AMD-based mini PCs but AMD still hasn’t released any low-power APUs with modern video codec support. N100/N150 will effortlessly decode 4K60 AV1 while AMD will struggle as it lacks AV1 support.My unit arrived with a corrupt Windows install and I had to start from scratch. Windows by default doesn’t include all the necessary drivers for wifi and other mystery devices in Device Manager, so make sure to download a copy from the manufacturer’s website to have on-hand in case you need them in the future. It’s very easy to install them all, you just double-click a batch file and it silently handles everything in a few minutes.The performance improvement from N100 to N150 is negligible, always less than 10%, often less than 5%. However this unit does include 12GB of DDR5 while older, cheaper N100 mini PCs commonly only have 8GB or use DDR4. The RAM is soldered, so it makes sense to get DDR5 since it does improve performance (more than the switch from N100 to N150 in fact). It also includes a DisplayPort video output instead of 3 HDMIs and this makes it a more flexible product than others. As with most mini PCs, this one runs virtually silent even when set to the high performance (15w) mode in BIOS. One other noteworthy advantage over some other mini PCs is that the wifi card appears to be upgradeable, which will extend its useful lifespan.A small downside is that it doesn’t support the “2030” M.2 form factor, it looks like the much less common “2042” is used. I wish this model featured faster ethernet ports but they’re only gigabit. If it had 2.5gb it would have more possible use-cases.As I said earlier, N100 to N150 is a tiny increase in performance, don’t pay a premium for it. If you can get a good price, this mini PC does exactly what it should.
